Operatives from the Western Naval Command on Wednesday stormed the national secretariat of the Nigeria Merchant Navy Officers and Water Transport Senior Staff Association on a fact-finding mission over the alleged extortion and harassment by some government agencies at sea.
It was gathered that the naval personnel came to gather more facts on the alleged extortion by men of the navy and other security outfits at sea before carrying out an extensive investigation on the development.
Business and Maritime West Africa had reported exclusively that the seafarers’ senior staff union had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, Mr. Ibrahim Idris, over the Marine unit commercializing police operations at sea.
The union in recent times had equally accused the Nigerian Navy, Immigration and Customs marine units of illegitimate dealings with seafarers seeking to board vessels at breakwaters.
The brief meeting held behind closed doors was in reaction to the petition written by the union.
