The Marine Unit of the Nigerian Police Force, Lagos, has began the manufacturing of fibre gun boats within the Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area in its quest to boost local capacity.
Apart from the speed boats donated to the force by the Lagos State government, the Marine Unit disclosed that all the fibre gun boats in use were built locally by officials of the unit.
A Superintendent of Police, Benjamin Ogungbure, disclosed this while responding to comments from stakeholders on the benefits of local production of such crafts in the country.
The marine chief who was represented by Ufuomanefe Akusu, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), stated that "all the fibre gun boats in use were built locally in Nigeria and every other boats that we use is our own product"
He noted that apart from the engine, all other elements for the production of the craft were sourced and developed locally. According to him, the marine command with existing platform at its disposal covers from Epe to Badagry with prompt response to distress calls.
The marine officer, however, urged ferry and boat operators and the public to reduce their speed while on the waterways, calling on stakeholders to report any form of suspicious movements.
Speaking about safety tips for the yuletide season, he cautioned operators, saying "we are in the ember months and very soon everywhere will be foggy "
"We want you all to be very careful during the period by reducing the speed of your boats at sea. We are very visible at sea, anywhere and anyday on the waterways, therefore report any funny case you find to us", he added.
